Who is SPRAVATO® for?

SPRAVATO® may be appropriate for adults who:

  • Have major depressive disorder
  • Have tried at least two antidepressants without enough improvement
  • Continue to experience depressive symptoms despite treatment

Treatment-resistant depression affects many individuals and may require approaches beyond standard medications.

How does SPRAVATO® work?

SPRAVATO® targets the NMDA receptor in the brain, which influences the glutamate system involved in mood and neural connectivity.

This mechanism may help:

  • Improve communication between brain cells
  • Support neural plasticity
  • Reduce depressive symptoms more rapidly than traditional medications

Some patients may experience improvement within hours or days, compared with weeks for standard antidepressants.

What should I expect during SPRAVATO® treatment?

Before your visit, you will be asked not to eat for at least two hours before taking SPRAVATO® and not to drink liquids for 30 minutes before treatment, as some people experience nausea or vomiting.

You must have a driver take you home from every SPRAVATO® appointment. You should not drive, operate machinery, or do anything requiring full alertness until the next day.

When you arrive, please come 10 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork. You will complete a PHQ-9 depression rating scale and sign consent forms.

Our team will check your blood pressure and pulse before treatment, as SPRAVATO® may increase blood pressure.

During your treatment session, you will self-administer SPRAVATO® nasal spray under nurse supervision. Your first treatments are typically scheduled twice weekly for the first four weeks. Your dose will determine whether you use two or three nasal spray devices. Each device is administered five minutes apart while you rest in a semi-reclined position.

After administration, your vital signs will be monitored for at least two hours. Our team will determine when you are ready to leave.

Can I be on both SPRAVATO® and antidepressants?

Yes. SPRAVATO® may be used on its own for treatment-resistant depression or alongside an oral antidepressant, depending on your diagnosis, treatment history, and insurance requirements.

Our team will walk you through your coverage requirements and coordinate with your prescribing provider to determine the safest and most appropriate treatment plan.

SPRAVATO® vs. ketamine: what’s the difference?

Both SPRAVATO® and ketamine-based treatments affect the glutamate system, but there are important differences.

SPRAVATO® is FDA-approved for depression and must be administered in a certified clinic under medical supervision. Ketamine, when used for depression, is typically considered off-label and may be offered as IV infusions, intramuscular injections, or lozenges.

Insurance commonly covers SPRAVATO® when criteria are met, while ketamine treatment is often paid out of pocket.

Can I do TMS and SPRAVATO®?

Yes. SPRAVATO® and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, are both evidence-based treatments for treatment-resistant depression. Because they work through different mechanisms, some patients may benefit from one treatment, the other, or a coordinated plan that includes both.

Our team works closely with each patient to determine the best timing and treatment approach based on symptoms, treatment history, and goals.

Does insurance cover SPRAVATO®?

Yes. Most insurance plans cover SPRAVATO® when medical criteria are met, including the medication and required clinical monitoring.

Before starting treatment, our nursing team will:

  • Conduct a benefits investigation
  • Provide an estimate of out-of-pocket costs
  • Assist with prior authorization when needed
  • Explore manufacturer assistance or financing options when available

We accept all major insurance plans and will help you understand your options.
